South St Standard is a relatively new joint to the Exeter bars and restaurants list. It’s fantastically located overlooking the Cathedral green at the top of South Street, and serves food and drinks all day. Everything from brunch to dinner, there a large array of options to feed all dietary requirements at this independent eatery. For those who know me, have really picked up on how often I find myself at South St Standard, and that’s because I can’t fault the food and love the vegan options available. Their cocktails are also wicked – it’s also 2 for 1 on cocktails every Thursday, so don’t miss out on that deal!
BRUNCH
My go-to recently has been the Vegan Breakfast which you can’t go wrong with: Lime and chilli avocado, bubble ‘n’ squeak, spinach, baked beans, oven ripened tomatoes, mushrooms and sourdough toast. Personally I love the addition of the bubble ‘n’ squeak, it’s an awesome change from hashbrowns in breakfast and it’s so tasty! I recently tried a brunch special created by Head Chef Ben; Dirty Vegan Beans. Words cannot describe how good this was for me, it’s served with amazing chimichurri sauce, creamy avocado and (vegan) buttery sourdough… here’s to hoping it can become permanent on the menu!

LUNCH and DINNER
The vegan options are vast, going from the Succotash Salad to the Seitanist burger. The Vegan Mezze platter is the perfect way to try some of the different options on offer: Sweet potato fries, butterbean hummus with flatbread, corn on the cob with a chimichurri sauce, leafy green salad and cauliflower steak with a tahini sauce. The chimichurri sauce on the corn on the cob is tangy and delicious, I could eat it from the pot! The Sri Lanka Samba comes high on my list too, a creamy curry with roasted cauliflower, tahini dressing and flatbread. This is a delicious dish, and it’s great to dip the flatbread in the sauce, and of course use it to mop up every last bit of flavour in the dish! The MUST try though is the Seitanist burger, it’s a mushroom and chestnut seitan patty with amazing truffle vegan mayo – as far as vegan burgers go this is definitely one of the best I’ve had!
